Our editorial standards

How we write and check every article

Health information should be easy to read and safe to trust. Every new and updated article follows these six rules.

  1. Trusted sources only

Facts come from government health agencies and peer-reviewed research, such as NIDA, SAMHSA, the CDC and studies on PubMed Central. We link each source so you can check it.

  2. Checked by our clinical team

Before a new or updated article goes live, a licensed member of our clinical team checks the facts. We are bringing older articles up to this standard one at a time.

  3. Plain, respectful words

We keep words simple. We put people first, too. We say “a person with a substance use disorder,” not a label.

  4. Dated and kept current

Every article shows its date. When research or medical guidance changes, we update the article.

  5. Education, not sales

No sponsored posts or paid placements. We never pay for referrals or offer anything in return for choosing treatment.

  6. Not a substitute for care

Articles can't diagnose or treat anyone. In an emergency, call 911. In a mental health crisis, call or text 988.

See something wrong or out of date? Tell us, and we'll review it with our clinical team.

Questions

Blog questions, answered

Who writes the articles on the New Beginnings blog?

The New Beginnings Detox & Recovery team writes them. They are for anyone who wants answers about substance use, withdrawal and mental health. A licensed member of our clinical team checks new and updated articles before they go live. Read our editorial standards above.

Is this blog medical advice?

No. The articles explain how detox, withdrawal and treatment work in general. They can't diagnose you or replace a doctor. Stopping some substances all at once, like alcohol or benzodiazepines, can be dangerous, so talk with a medical provider first. In an emergency, call 911.

Where should I start if I'm worried about someone I love?

Use the Recovery Compass at the top of this page. Choose “Someone I love” and a topic, and it picks three articles to start with. Our Family Support page explains how we include families. You can also call (855) 627-3422 any time to talk it through.

What treatment does New Beginnings offer?

We offer medical detox and residential treatment in a six-bed home in Sylmar, in Los Angeles County. We also treat mental health conditions that happen alongside substance use. Before you leave, we help set up the aftercare you need next.

Does New Beginnings take insurance?

We work with PPO plans through your out-of-network benefits. We don't accept HMO plans or Medi-Cal. Admissions can check your PPO benefits for free during a call.

Is it private to save articles or call admissions?

Yes. Saving articles doesn't need an account. Your saved list stays in this browser on this device, and we can't see it. Calls to admissions are confidential, and treatment records are protected by federal privacy law, including 42 CFR Part 2.

How often is the blog updated?

We add new articles and refresh older ones as research and medical guidance change. Every article shows its date, so you can see how current it is.

Can I suggest a topic or report a mistake?

Yes. Send us a note through our contact page. If something is wrong, we'll review it with our clinical team and fix it.

Have a question an article can't answer?

Admissions answers 24/7. The call is free and private, and you can ask for yourself or for someone you love.

In danger right now? Call 911. Thinking about suicide? Call or text 988.
